Julia Reimer

Artist’s Statement
Julia Reimer's designs are inspired by the landscape that surrounded her childhood home in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in southern Alberta. "That's where I acquired an appreciation for the crisp prairie light, and the undulating hills and grasslands carved by wind and water that influence my artistic vision", she says, adding "My love of the stark montane landscape has led to an aesthetic based on beautiful simplicity of form and light."
These characteristics are clearly expressed in her art. Her pieces are modern in design and reveal the essence of light, translucent colour and pure form. Reimer has received numerous awards and scholarships. In 2000, she received the Sheila Hugh Mackay Award and a scholarship to study with Dante Marioni at the Pilchuck Glass School in the U.S.. In 2001, the Alberta Craft Council awarded her a scholarship and her 'Jetson Bowl', shown here, was a finalist in the Niche Craft Awards in the U.S.
Reimer's studies in glass began at the Alberta College of Art and Design - ACAD, Calgary in 1996. Subsequently she has traveled to France, Spain, and Hungary to study traditional European glass techniques, and pursued skill-specific workshops at Red Deer College, Red Deer, Alberta and at Pilchuck. Her work is carried in several Canadian galleries and has been exhibited in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.
Reimer is based in Calgary, Alberta and blows at Norm's Garage, a local studio founded by Norm Faulkner, director and founder of the glass program at ACAD.
