Smoke-Fired Pottery
This technique known as primitive firing goes back 5000 years and
was practiced by the peoples of prehistoric Egypt, Europe and the
Middle East. Although today it has become an art form many countries
in Africa, South America and India for example still make their
pots this way for everyday cooking and storage of grains. My pots
are formed on the wheel, incised and then burnished hard by hand.
Burnishing fuses the clay to help seal the surface and produce the
fine sheen. They are then low bisque fired for strength. For decorative
purposes they are smoked in a mixture of soft and hardwood sawdust
and many combustible materials such as coffee grounds, pine cones
and leaves. The black is a mixture of reduction and carbonization
from the smoke.
Because these pots are unglazed they are not recommended for food
or liquid.

Bill Clinton visited our gallery in December 2006. He made several
purchases including some smoke fired pieces by Lynda Jone. Lynda
sent a letter to Bill Clinton thanking him and the following letter
is a response from Bill Clinton.
Incised Blackware
These pieces are wheel thrown, brushed with a mixture of oxides
in clay slip and incised through the slip. The designs of my incising
are free form and are influenced by native art from many countries,
but not consciously referenced. I begin with a line. The next line
is built on the previous line, not planning too far ahead, until
I have completed the circle. As in life I am also learning not to
calculate and plan everything, that each thing we do is a step,
which flows to the next thing, and to let go, trust and just know
that "it all fits".
The pieces are high-fired and all are vitrified. Although their
appearance is decorative they are also functional for flowers or
plants. The glazed pieces are safe for food but not recommended
because of the difficulty in cleaning. The unglazed surfaces are
not meant for food but could function as bowls for fruit, nuts,
floating candles, etc.
