Robert Held is an integral part of the art glass
movement in North America. In addition to being widely exhibited
throughout the United States, his work is carried in galleries
in Europe and Japan. From his early years as a graduate of the
University of Southern California in 1967, Bob has been refining
and developing his skills as a master artist.
He has a long and proud history of producing glass art in Canada.
In 1968, Bob initiated the hot glass program at Sheridan College
in Oakville, Ontario. Since then he has embarked on a successful
career focusing on the magic of glass. Although techniques have
become more varied and design elements have become more unique,
Bob has stayed at the top of his field. At work in his studio,
located at 2130 Pine St., Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
he constantly strives to broaden and enhance glass art and continues
to mentor and educate his staff, a crew of enthusiastic craftsmen.
Bob was originally an internationally acclaimed ceramic artist
until he succumbed to the siren call of glass. Bob played an instrumental
role in the seduction of another ceramist by the incredible medium
of glass. In the book , the story of glass, edited by the Dane,
Finn Lynggaard and published in 1998, Lynggaard attributes his
start in glass to the many nights in the summer of 1971 that he
spent in the hot shop at Sheridan, while he was actually there
as a guest ceramic instructor.
"Glassblowing allows me to explore both painterly concerns and
my fascination with surface decoration, while continuing to challenge
the other physical and creative skills required to take the vessel
shape in ever new directions."
"I strive to create pieces that provide both a tactile and visual
pleasure. It is through this experience that I can share my passion
for glass with the world."
The Art Ark Gallery has carried Bob's work since 1999. Below
is a small sample of pieces in the gallery.
