Gary Haywood

Gary went from trade school to an artist's studio. He got his start in Edmonton with an apprenticeship,
a love of nature, and an artistic vision. Now he lives in Kelowna with a trade that forms the technical
foundation for his art --metal sculpture.
Metal work has been a livelong occupation for Gary. It began as a child in his father's welding shop.
It continued with metalworking throughout high school and led to the completion of a Sheet Metal
Mechanic's Apprenticeship, with honours, at the Northern Alberta Institute Of Technology.
Since then, he has become an accomplished welder and master tradesman in metal work. All these
earlier experiences and 30 years of training have given him the technical expertise to use his imagination
to create something new and original.
Art has always been part of his life. He took art classes throughout high school and he has some formal
education in painting, photography, drafting, and design. He always had it in mind to devote himself to
art; but in later life. It is part of him, a lifelong dream, something that he does. The amount of experience
he gained working with metals, heat colouring, patinas, and multi-metal welding led directly to becoming
an artist sooner than he expected.
However, it is an artistic vision inspired by nature and music that creates the pieces of quality, detail, and
fluidity that he makes. Nature presents the form of the pieces and music their emotion. Some of his
sculptures are made from hundreds of pieces of copper, others from a single piece of steel. Not only
are the sculptures unique so are the metal styling. The pieces are three-dimensional some of which are
life like representations from nature others are abstract.
While Gary has continued with his trade, he has been dedicating himself seriously to sculpture since 2001.
Presently, his pieces are exhibited in galleries and art collections in both Canada and the United States.
