Artist Statement
My artwork combines drawing, painting and the integration of a variety of textural materials. I collect and add collage items that are in direct relationship with the subject of my work. My artistic expression involves playing with these art mediums: combining, adding, removing, and creating tactile surfaces that come alive with their own unpredictable uniqueness. Thus, the texture of the canvas dictates my next brushstroke. I also like to create a mysterious edge to my work by hiding and repeating images. May the passion I experience creating my artwork transfer to you, the viewer.

Biography
Dawn Emerson is a local emerging artist residing in Kelowna, British Columbia. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Education. Emerson works part-time as a teacher-on-call, teaches art classes, and devotes the rest of her time to working in her studio.
As an artist, Emerson works with a variety of art mediums to create her spontaneous and fresh individual style of artwork. She is a mixed media artist, which gives her the freedom to create her own visual language. Emerson's work has been shown throughout BC. She has had solo art exhibitions at the Alternator Gallery, Rotary Centre of the Arts, Laughing Moon, and other alternate venues. Her group exhibitions include galleries such as the Art Ark Gallery, Kelowna Art Gallery, Summerland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of the South Okanagan, and the Nelson Art Gallery. In the Okanagan, the Art Ark Gallery represents Emerson's work. She has also had works selected provincially and regionally for the BC Festival of the Arts. Emerson was selected to create a commissioned work for the 2005 BC Museums Association Annual Conference.
Emerson's artwork has included themes such as back alleys, street scenes, the homeless, mothers in the home, and the aged. She is currently working on a series based on the theme of 'doors and windows.' Her newest work reflects images she has collected from the urban landscapes locally and from her travels abroad. Emerson enjoys creating artwork related to people and everyday life. Her work may portray people among the texture of buildings or the uniqueness of the buildings where people have been or are peering out.
