Biography
Born in 1957 in Vancouver, BC, I grew up beside the University of
BC Endowment Lands with a forest on one side and the big city on
the other. In 1989 I moved to the small town of Nelson, BC where
my home and workshop are four blocks from downtown and six blocks
from the woods.
Artist Statement
I started carving at 18, in wood at first, switching to stone in
1991 and I have recently done bronze editions of stone originals.
I've tried working in modeling clay like most bronze artists but
found my brain just didn't work that way. I am a reductionist, a
reactionary--I need the limitations of a finite block of stone and
the possibilities it holds.
Some say the sculpture is in the stone and you just have to let
it out. The way I see it there are a bunch of sculptures in there
and I have a lot of choices to make.
