Mary Bull was born in Troon, Scotland in 1920 and moved with
her family to Kelowna when she was an infant. She attended the
Vancouver School of Art from 1938-1939 where she studied under
Jack Shadbolt. She later attended the Ontario College of Art for
two years and then left to join the Air Force during World War
II as a practical nurse. Following this, she studied in England
and Mexico, gaining experience in portraiture, batik and abstract
painting.
Bull's paintings are playful and vibrant, using expressive colour
and distortion of perspective to portray the figure's personality
and the individuality of the landscape.
Mary Bull has had solo exhibitions at the Kelowna Art Gallery,
Vernon Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of the South Okanagan and
continues to be active in the Okanagan art community.
